I stayed overnight in Trois Rivieres, Quebec on my short two day tour that also took me through Montreal, Granby, Sherbrooke, Drummondville and Shawinigan in Quebec, along with Belleville and Cornwall in Ontario. The primary focus of the trip was video but I did get a chance to do a little photography in the evening.

I’ve mentioned before on this site that my family comes from the Eastern Townships in Quebec and I am the only one born in Ontario. My experience with the province as a kid was grueling weekend drives from London, Ontario to the other side of Montreal to visit relatives for a short time then turn around and go home. As a result, I never really saw much of what the province had to offer and learned to regret going there.

But then, I grew up and with most family either passed on or moved on from Quebec, I returned as a tourist. What formerly was boring as hell for me suddenly became a beautiful and exciting part of Canada to visit. This latest visit, although limited in time, was a real reminder of what the rest of Canada is missing out on if they don’t get in the car (or airplane) and visit this province. The landscape is diverse and the cityscapes are unique, fitting more into a European look than something you’d find anywhere else on this continent.

See below for more information about Trois Rivieres and a video driving tour of the downtown area. Also, if you’re visiting, I would recommend the hotel I stayed at. The Comfort Inn Trois Rivieres is conveniently located near the junction of highway 40 and highway 55. The hotel is a short drive from the Pont Laviolette (Laviolette Bridge) seen in some of the images below and is an easy drive from the main downtown area. This is a clean, safe hotel with nice rooms and is CONSIDERABLY less expensive than if you stayed in Quebec City or Montreal.

Trois Rivieres, Quebec Image Gallery

As with everywhere on this whirlwind journey, I would have liked to spend more time taking photos. The following gallery is what I came up with after I arrived at the hotel for the night. For full-size, high resolution versions for any of the photos in the image gallery, simply click on the individual pictures. It was such a treat at the bridge – just as I arrived, the amazing sunset light lit up the bridge.

<a located approximately halfway between Montreal and Quebec City in the Canadian province of Quebec. The city is not actually named for three rivers but for the three mouths of the Saint Maurice River as it empties into the St. Lawrence River. The three mouths are a result of two small islands sitting in the middle of the river.

The city was founded on July 4, 1634 and was incorporated on June 10, 1857. Located in the Mauricie Region of Quebec, Trois Rivieres has a population of 137,000 (152,000 metro). Located at the junction of highway 40 and highway 55, the city is 140 kilometres northeast of Montreal and 129 kilometres southwest of Quebec City.

The Pont Laviolette (Laviolette Bridge) is the only bridge crossing the St. Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City. Opened on December 20, 1967, the bridge is 2,707 metres or 8,881 feet in length. There are four lanes crossing and, unlike a number of other bridge across this river, there is not toll. Previous to its construction, the crossing was served by ferry boat.

Trois Rivieres, Quebec Downtown Driving Tour Video

The video below was taken at around 6am. I had 12 hours to roam the streets and underground of the downtown and surrounding area. The first half of the day was downright crappy with rain and wind. Around noon, the sky magically cleared up for an excellent second half of the day.

When I was a kid, I’d pass through this city several times a year on very long car rides from London, Ontario to the Eastern Townships region of Quebec. Back then, it was to visit family with eight hour car rides and a world that doesn’t speak English equalling very little fun. In more recent years, with mostly all family in Quebec moved on or passed on, I am now rediscovering the area for the great destination it really is.

The following are a set of videos I put together from my most recent visit to Montreal.

The above video encompasses my whole 12 hour visit to Montreal. Everything is included from the Montreal Biosphere on Saint Helens Island to Olympic Stadium and the Montreal Tower to the view from Mont Royal to the port area along the St. Lawrence River.

The walk up Mont Royal really starts down on St. Catherines Street and Peel Street. Peel bends upward toward the mountain at an ever increasing steepness. After passing through McGill University (where one has to wonder if there are any students out of shape, considering the hill training workout that is part of their daily routine), the stairs begin where Rue Peel ends at Avenue des Pins.

The stairs are lengthy. The rain and wind were reaching their climax while I was ascending. The view from the Chateau at the top is amazing and probably the number one thing you can experience for free in Montreal. For those not looking for the added workout of the stair climb, there is actually ample parking a short walk from the chateau.

So many times when I was a kid, I took the Metro with cousins from Longueuil to Pie IX (with a connection at Berri-UQAM, of course), the subway station at Olympic Stadium. Back in those days, the Montreal Expos were a big deal and tickets, believe it or not, were somewhat scarce. Near the end, a big crowd was 6,000 in the 45,000 seat stadium.

The one stop between Longueuil and the Berri-UQAM station is on Saint Helen’s Island at Parc Jean Drapeau. This is an area that was developed for Expo ’67 and is now a large urban park. This was the first time I’d ever got off at the stop and set foot on the island.

There was barely another sole on the island at 7:30am, on a weekday, with rain threatening. The views across the St. Lawrence River from the shores of the island were quite awesome.

The first time I visited Montreal’s Olympic Stadium was for the 1976 Olympic Games. Of course, the stadium was built for that event. I was still a few months away from my eighth birthday at the time so it’s pretty hard recalling the memories. I believe we watched a soccer game between two low ranked countries.

Later, we headed down to the old Montreal Forum to watch gymnastics. Surprisingly, I remember that more because even at that age, I was a fan of everything hockey. It wasn’t to see a Montreal Canadiens game, but I was in the Forum! I never did see a hockey game there but did see the Canadiens and New York Rangers play at the new Bell Centre back in 2002.

As I mentioned earlier, there were many fond memories of watching the Montreal Expos at the Olympic Stadium in their glory years. I remember faking an illness in 1981, so I could get out of school to watch the Expos and Los Angeles Dodgers face off in game 5 of the NLCS. It was a best of five series back then and with the series tied at two, the teams were to play on Sunday. However, the game was rained out and was reschedule for Monday afternoon. I remember my illness involving a fake throw-up of jello…

Anyway, the Expos lost and would never get that close to the World Series again. The team moved out of Montreal after 2004 to become the Washington Nationals. Since, the stadium has sat mostly empty, serving as a home for the Grey Cup every once in a while.

Montreal’s 14 kilometre long secret. Starting in the 1800’s, the Lachine Canal was an active set of locks that diverted ships around the strong current of the St. Lawrence River. The grain elevators that line the canal near its terminus at Montreal’s Vieux Port have been inactive for over a decade and are slowly being converted to something more prosperous.

Now, the strip of land adjacent to the Lachine Canal is one long parkway. The Canal itself is used for watersports like rowing, canoeing and kayaking.

I hope you enjoy the show. Not a ship to regularly stop in Montreal, this was a bit of a treat for a guy who spends a little time as a Cruise/Travel Consultant. Equally as rare, docked right beside the AIDAbella was the globetrotting Crystal Symphony.

The AIDAbella is one of eleven ships belonging to AIDA Cruises and has been in service since 2008. She was christened by international model Eva Padberg. I have no idea who that is but she must be famous in certain circles.

She, the AIDAbella – not Ava Padberg, was built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany. The vessel has a gross tonnage of 68,500 and is 827 feet or 252 metres in length. The ship has 14 decks with eleven accessible to passengers.

The AIDAbella has 1,025 staterooms on board with a normal capacity of 2,050. However, she can fit up to 2,450 passengers max. 646 crew make for a pleasant cruise. The ship is registered out of Genoa, Italy but German is the language of choice spoken onboard all AIDA Cruises boats. Word is, there is a nude sunbathing area near the rear of the ship.

This ship was scheduled to leave Montreal two days after I was there. She was basically shadowing the Crystal Symphony on a Canada / New England cruise that would end in New York City.

So what’s the scoop on AIDA Cruises? As mentioned, there are eleven ships in the fleet and all operate exclusively in German. Formerly known as SeeTours, AIDA is part of the Carnival Corporation and is the German branch of Costa Crociere.

Yes, Costa Crociere, the same company that operated the ill-fated Costa Concordia that capsized off the coast of Italy. In fact, Captain Francesco Schettino (The Coward Captain, as he come to be known) was at the helm of the AIDAblu in 2010 when he was manoeuvring a dock job too fast and caused damage to the ship.

AIDA Cruises introduced ‘club cruising’ in 1996 and all ships still adhere to this model. The boats somewhat resemble a low cost all-inclusive resort. All dining is via large buffet restaurants. There are no dress codes. The ships have a focus on wellness and fitness.

Another interesting angle to AIDA Cruises that will not be found on any other other major cruise companies is that the crew, when off-duty, are freely allowed to mingle with passengers. You would have to believe that would vastly increase the chance of success for single passengers looking to score.

The HD video below is short and taken on the same day as the images above. Unfortunately, security was pretty high around this ship and the Crystal Symphony was blocking her on one side.

Share this:

The post The AIDAbella at the Montreal Cruise Port appeared first on It's About Travelling.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">1545</post-id>
