Despite its reputation, Detroit, Michigan has quite a beautiful downtown core. The old mixed with the new makes for a nice skyline. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your personal opinion, the best place to capture a photo of that skyline is from a foreign country.

That’s right, the best views of Detroit come from Canada. The Windsor, Ontario riverfront to be precise. Although I feel downtown Detroit is just as safe as any other major city, many would not agree. Many would appreciate the safety of spending time with expensive camera gear on the opposite side of the Detroit River.

There are plans to cross the Ambassador Bridge into Detroit into the near future. It’s been a few years and I’m missing the Motor City. This time around, I did a quick tour of the Southwestern tip of Ontario to capture video and photos from Sarnia, Wallaceburg, Chatham, Windsor and Leamington. The first video published from this trip, a driving tour of downtown Windsor, Ontario, can be seen below.

After all the video was shot, I had time to just sit and relax on the riverfront. The forecast was for overcast skies and rain showers. As you can see below, that certainly wasn’t the case.

Detroit Skyline Sunset Gallery

The photos in both the galleries below are cropped to fit nicely in the gallery format. To view the full sized images, simply click on the individual pictures.

The six photographs in the sunset gallery are created from bracketed images (aka HDR). But, I did not go at all overboard with editing and each represents the true magic that was in the skies for a short while that night.

Detroit Skyline Blue Hour Gallery

A migraine had been building in my head all day and was at it’s peak while taking the photos below. Still, I’m glad I hung around and wish I could have stayed longer into the night. But, with a pounding skull and a nearly four hour drive home ahead of me, I cut it off here.

It should be noted, there is ample parking along the Windsor riverfront. Some lots charge but the fee is quite reasonable. An open parkway runs for quite a distance. The area is quite vibrant and there is a definite police presence to keep things safe.

The photos in the gallery below are single long exposure images (no HDR here) of thirty seconds in length. Again, to fit the straight lines of the gallery, some photos have been cropped. For the full size version, simply click on the individual pictures.

As 2014 draws to a close, we can’t help but throw in a ‘Best Of’ review-type article, or two. Today, we look at ten of the finest images we posted at the companion site to It’s About Travelling, Pic of the Day.

Picoday is a small site we have using the WordPress dot com free platform. Therefore, there’s only images and text and no advertising. The title is a bit misleading because, although we try our hardest to post a new image and article each day, it rarely works out like that. What it provides us is a great place to post cool pictures that aren’t really part of a bigger theme and therefore don’t end up on the main site.

Check ’em out and let us know what you think. By clicking on each image, you travel to the actually site and article where these pictures started out.

Above is a White Faced Meadowhawk. I was out on the trail one day over the summer and it seemed almost surreal with all the flying insects posing like it was some sort of photo shoot. We did a more detailed article on flying insects on the main site.

The Cheltenham Badlands, or Caledon Badlands, is an unusual natural formation. At least, it’s an unusual formation for Ontario. In the west, it’s much more common. These small plot of land is currently surrounded with controversy as locals try to keep it all to themselves.

The autumn of 2014 was excellent for fall foliage in Ontario and much of North America. The weather was kind of crappy but the trees loved it. This was taken at Pine River Provincial Fishing Area, north of Orangeville.

Finally, after decades of visiting, I was able to get out and get some Niagara Falls night images. This is a look at Horseshoe Falls at the crest and the Niagara River above. It’s cropped as it is because the illumination of the waterfall is a bit flawed by the shadow of the Table Rock Centre. I simply cut out the shadowed area.

Above is the view across Ramsey Lake from Bell Park in Sudbury, Ontario. Beyond the lakefront houses are the buildings of Laurentian University. However, that is not Lake Ramsey that is hosting the reflection. This is Photoshop fraud. The lake was actually frozen over with alternating patches of snow drift and ice surface.

This single prop plane was on display at an open house at the Brampton Flight Centre.

About a week after the above image was taken, the waters of the Trent-Severn Waterway would be much more crowded. The image was taken just before the summer traffic came in. In the background are the world famous Peterborough Hydraulic Lift Locks. Great cruises are available that will take you up and down these locks and a traditional flood lock. Check out this article on the Peterborough Lift Lock Tour.

Birthplace of Bobby Orr and home of the longest train trestle east of the Rocky Mountains. Parry Sound is a picturesque town on Georgian Bay that turns into a bustling tourist centre in the summer. The train trestle is over 100 years old and crosses the Seguin River. We were able to get some great Parry Sound night images this fall.

Lac Bromont in Quebec. This image was taken at nearly the spot where my parents once had a cottage. They sold the cottage when they moved to London, Ontario in the mid 1960’s. The structure is still there but is decaying fast. Back in the day, there was no road access and they had to park and cross the lake by boat.

Not a new image but a new look. This photo of the Renaissance Center and downtown Detroit, Michigan was taken in February, 2012. It was restyled this year as part of a collection of three skylines that also included Toronto and Montreal.

All the best in 2015! The year of making memories, not living in them.

When it comes to skyscrapers, it’s not all about the height. Tall buildings are a dime a dozen these days and new ones are popping up around the world on almost a daily basis. Hell, the iconic main tower of the Renaissance Center in Detroit, Michigan is just the 101st tallest building in the United States.

To me, what defines a skyscraper as truly great is how it defines the skyline it is a part of. Some cities in Canada and the United States are instantly identified in pictures by that one special building. On the other hand, I have a hard time sometimes telling the difference between Calgary, Edmonton or Winnipeg in Canada (ok, that’s a little exaggerated). South of the border, I would probably mistake Miami for Tampa or San Diego with just a quick look at the skyline.

What follows is a look at what I feel are the eight most iconic skyscrapers in North America that instantly identify the skyline. Keep in mind, these are skyscrapers. The CN Tower, Calgary Tower and Seattle’s Space Needle do instantly identify their city but are not included here.

Willis Tower

Formerly known as, and better known as, the Sears Tower, the Willis Tower is Chicago. Completed in 1973, this Lego block, jet black structure was the tallest skyscraper in the world until 1998 when surpassed by the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Willis Tower stands 442 metres or 1,450 feet tall and consists of 108 floors. With the completion of the latest version of the World Trade Center, the tower has dropped to the second tallest in the United States and is ranked the eleventh tallest in the world.

Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel

Since 1976, the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel has defined the Atlanta, Georgia skyline with its cylindrical shape. Not the tallest building in the city, the Westin is 220 metres or 723 feet tall and consists of 73 floors. The building is the 107th tallest skyscraper in the United States.

If the tower was surrounded by four smaller towers, it might confuse Atlanta with Detroit. The main tower of the Renaissance Center in Detroit is nearly an exact twin to the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel.

U.S. Bank Tower

We’ve all seen the Los Angeles skyline thousands of times via the movies and television. The U.S. Bank Tower is the tallest and most uniquely shaped. It is also the first to get blown up in an alien invasion.

The U.S. Bank Tower was completed in 1989 and stands 310 metres or 1,018 feet tall. Nearly 300 feet taller than the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, the U.S. Bank Tower consists of the same number of floors at 73. The building is the eleventh tallest in the United States and the 65th tallest skyscraper in the world.

Transamerica Pyramid

Probably the most unique skyscraper in the United States. The Transamerica Building, or the Transamerica Pyramid, has defined the San Francisco skyline since 1972. The building in 260 metres or 850 feet tall but contains just 48 floors.

The Transamerica Pyramid remains the 35th tallest building in the United States. In the world, the tower is the 190th tallest skyscraper.

Renaissance Center

On the banks of the Detroit River, across from Windsor, Ontario, the Renaissance Center is an island of prosperity in a dying city. Completed in 1977, the main tower is the tallest in Detroit and stands 222 metres or 727 feet tall. There are 73 floors in the main building, which now serves as worldwide headquarter for General Motors. As mentioned earlier, this is the 101st tallest building in the United States.

Place Ville Marie

Canadian cities tend to have skylines that are ill-defined or are defined by towers or sports stadiums. Calgary has the Calgary Tower and the odd shaped ScotiaBank Saddledome Arena. Toronto has the CN Tower. Place Ville Marie in Montreal, Quebec is the exception. This X or cross shaped building seems ageless, completed in 1962.

Not the tallest building in Montreal, Place Ville Marie stands 188 metres or 617 feet tall and consists of 47 floors. Currently, the tower is the 20th tallest in Canada. That rank will drop to 27th over the next few years as the crazed building boom continues in Toronto.

The Key Tower

Cleveland? Cut the city some slack, it’s the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Key Tower defines the city because it is so out of place with the rest of the downtown core. A little better off than Detroit, but not by much, the Key Tower allows the city to cling to hopes of a better future.

The tower was completed in 1991 and opened for business in January, 1992. It was a time of renewal in Cleveland, Ohio with the nearby construction of Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena. Progressive, formerly Jacob’s Field, is home to the Cleveland Indians baseball team. Quicken Loans Arena is home to the Lake Erie Monsters, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche.

Key Tower stands 289 metres or 947 feet high and consists of 57 floors. It is the 20th tallest building in the United States and the 109th tallest in the world.

Chrysler Building

What kind of idiot would pick the Chrysler Building over the Empire State Building or the new World Trade Center as the skyscraper that defines the Manhattan skyline? Me. It might not be the tallest but that unique ‘chrome-dome’ and the gargoyles that guard it make it more identifiable than the city’s other great structures.

The Chrysler Building was completed in 1930 and was the tallest building in the world for nearly a full year before the Empire State Building was completed. The tower stands 282 metres or 925 feet tall and consists of 77 floors. this is the eighth tallest building in the United States and the 60th tallest in the world.

As far as television and movie appearances go, the Chrysler Building is probably neck and neck with the ESB.

Why don’t you fly out of Buffalo? This is the first question, or advice, that anyone has for anyone else in Southern Ontario that plans to fly to the United States. Why? Flying out of the much smaller Buffalo Niagara International Airport, as opposed to Toronto Pearson, can be much easier, faster and cheaper to American destinations.

For one, the commuter flying network in the U.S. is infinitely greater than in Canada. Competition ultimately reduces pricing. Secondly, passing customs in your car on the Peace Bridge between Fort Erie and Buffalo, New York can be easier and faster than at the airport. Thirdly, parking and ‘park and fly’ packages are simply cheaper in Buffalo.

Here’s a twist. If you’re in the Toronto area and you want to fly to another major Canadian destination, does it also make sense to fly out of Buffalo? What? Sound ridiculous? Maybe not.

We took a look at eight major destinations in Canada, comparing pricing from Buffalo compared to Toronto. This comparison takes the lowest possible prices including taxes for a round trip departing on Sunday, November 10, 2013 and returning Sunday, November 17, 2013. Pricing was correct as of October 20, 2013, is subject to change and availability without notice and should be used as reference only.

The results are interesting. Some locations are much cheaper out of Buffalo and some are more expensive. Some locations just aren’t practical. All flights out of Buffalo make connections while all flights out of Toronto are direct. Times are given as a reference but this case study is really just about the price.

From Buffalo via United or Delta: $304.00

This is not feasible. If you’re driving to Buffalo from the Greater Toronto Area, you may as well just drive in the other direction for a few more hours to get to Montreal. Via United, the flight departs at 17:17 and arrives at 21:52, connecting through Cleveland, Ohio. Via Delta, the flight departs at 08:00 and arrives at 11:54, connecting through Detroit, Michigan.

Destination: Halifax, Nova Scotia (YHZ)

This flight departs at 21:00 EST and arrives at 23:59 AST (22:59 EST). This is a direct flight.

From Buffalo via United: $525.00

This flight departs at 10:29 EST and arrives at 16:04 AST (15:04 EST). This flight connects at Newark International. Not feasible but it would possibly be a great view directly up the Atlantic coast from New York to Nova Scotia.

Destination: St. John’s, Newfoundland (YYT)

From Toronto via Air Canada: $584.00

This flight is really the only option as flying out of Buffalo will eventually connect in Toronto anyway. It departs at 06:50 EST and arrives at 11:18 NST (9:48 EST). This is a direct flight.

From Buffalo via Air Canada or Delta: $839.00

Again, this is just for reference and unless you’re in it for the flying experience, this is simply a bad idea. Via Air Canada, the flight connects in Chicago and Toronto, departing at 16:31 EST and arriving at 03:23 NST (01:53 EST). Via Delta, the flight departs at 11:53 EST and arrives at 23:56 NST (22:26 EST) and connects at Detroit and Toronto.

We took two laps on the 2.9 mile loop, one with the inside view and one with the outside view.

The People Mover is an elevated train that loops through the downtown core of Detroit. The train is automated and consists of two cars. The price is minimal and it’s a great, safe way to see downtown Motown.

Pictured in the video are these Detroit landmarks and much more:

On March 4, Angie and I found ourselves staying in downtown Detroit, Michigan at the Greektown Casino Hotel. The hotel is top-rate and a relative bargain at $95. I hadn’t stayed in the core of Motown for about a decade. This is a changed city. Part of me was a little disappointed that the city…Continue reading Pictures of Detroit: A City Transforming

On March 4, Angie and I found ourselves staying in downtown Detroit, Michigan at the Greektown Casino Hotel. The hotel is top-rate and a relative bargain at $95. I hadn’t stayed in the core of Motown for about a decade. This is a changed city.

Part of me was a little disappointed that the city that stood as an abandoned museum of the start of the 20th century was being restored and rebuilt at a rapid rate. Part of me was happy for the people of Detroit that had watched their city decay for so long.

I’m so thankful that the city is restoring the classic buildings like the Broderick Tower, Book-Cadillac Hotel and Book Tower instead of tearing these classics down. The core would seem to be becoming an adult Disney World with the new baseball stadium (Comerica Park) and football stadium (Ford Field), along with a burgeoning Casino industry. The Detroit People Mover is a theme park-like elevated train that transports people in a loop around the downtown core.

There still is an enormous amount of decay in a massive ring between the downtown core and the suburbs. If you’re into house fires (for whatever reason..), Detroit is your dream destination. I had hoped to get more pictures of this but really only had time for the Michigan Central Station, just of Michigan Ave (see pictures below). The train station has been abandoned since 1988 but is currently in the early stages of restoration.
