Parc Des Chutes De La Chaudiere (Translation: Bad Lighting Falls)

Just kidding. But, like any waterfall that faces north, you will have enormous trouble with the lighting. The sun is perpetually behind the plunge.

That being said, if you’re a photographer and you weren’t in a rush, this place will yield a ton of pretty impressive views. It’s a place you could wander around all day and keep discovering new angles. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a lot of time and our visit was pretty express.

We stopped by in mid-September, 2018 after spending the night at the nearby KOA Quebec City. Traveling in a slow moving, 30 year old motor home, we needed to get moving to reach our planned destination of Mount Carleton Provincial Park in New Brunswick while there was still some daylight.

About The Waterfall

Parc Chutes De La Chaudiere is an easy to visit waterfall in Levis, Quebec. Set in an urban environment with a hydro-electric plant attached, it is surprisingly easy to convince yourself you’re in a wilderness setting.

Typically, visitors to Quebec City will opt to visit nearby Montmorency Falls over this one. Don’t get too lost in the hype, Chaudiere Falls is pretty damn impressive and should also be visited.

The waterfall is located conveniently just off the main highway 20 at the junction with highway 73. In fact, the waterfall can be seen from the highway. Parking is free and fairly ample. However, we visited on a week day in September so the parking might get a little more hectic in high season.

When you first arrive, you’ll assume the place is crowded by the number of cars parked. However, we had little human contact. The park is pretty vast and part of a larger trail system. It’s my assumption that locals park here to access the recreation trails and are not concerned with exploring a waterfall they’ve seen many times before.

The waterfall is 35 metres or 115 feet in height and located on the Chaudiere River in the city of Levis, Quebec. There is a 113 metre log suspension bridge for pedestrian traffic that stands 23 metres above the river, not far downstream from the waterfall.

The bridge offers great views in both directions. Upstream, you have the waterfall. Downstream, you have downtown Quebec City and the bridges that cross the St. Lawrence River. Completely safe, the bridge can be a bit daunting as it bounces with every step and it looks like they’ve done some emergency work to patch up the wooden plank surface.

If this park was located in the Greater Toronto Area, there would be a barrier bonanza. This area is relatively barrier free. You can approach quite close the base of the waterfall if you desire.

Here’s a little photo idea bonus – If you walk across the main parking lot to the overpass that crosses highway 73, you will get some pretty great views of Quebec City from about the middle.
