Nothing in depth, here. After an evening of photography at nearby Jones Falls, we took a quick stop by the harbour in downtown Owen Sound, Ontario. It’s a pretty little town with a deep history of ship building and prohibition. These days, its pretty quiet and quite peaceful for a guy, his camera and a tripod.
The images are taken along the harbour, just off 1st Avenue West. The bridge in some of the photos is 10th Street East, also highway 6/21. The bridge crosses the Sydenham River as it empties into Owen Sound. On the left side of the harbour, looking out toward Georgian Bay is the Great Lakes Elevator.
The colourful image with the Metro grocery store in the background is by no means an advertisement. It was the only angle I could get that wooden bumper together with all that colour. However, Metro is part of my stock portfolio, so you should shop there…

Owen Sound, Ontario used to thrive in the shipping industry as a major port / railway terminal. The city was also known for the manufacturing of ship propellers, mainly by the William Kennedy and Sons company. Those days are gone. The railroad is now a rail trail.
The Chi Cheemaun ferry winters in Owen Sound when not transferring cars and passengers between Tobermory and Manitoulin Island. That and the odd Great Lakes freighter, like the Algosteel, are the biggest things in the harbour these days.
The city has a bit of fame being known as the last city in Canada to be rid of prohibition. The city remained dry well into the 1970’s. In Owen Sound, tourism is taking over as the reason to be in town.
The Owen Sound population stands at 22,000 (32,000 in the greater area) with little growth since the 1990’s. Originally, the city was named Sydenham and was established in 1840. It has been the county seat for Grey County since 1852.
Both the Sydenham and Pottawatomi Rivers empty into Georgian Bay at this point. The city is surrounded by the cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment. This results in a great collection of waterfalls like Inglis Falls, Jones Falls, Indian Falls and more.
Owen Sound is 185 kilometres northwest of Toronto via highway 10 and highway 6. The city is 118 KM west of Barrie via highway 21 and is 106 kilometres southeast of Tobermory via highway 6.
