Back in 1994 or 1995 (long enough ago that I can’t remember when…) I visited Kinzua Bridge in northwest Pennsylvania. I was just finishing college and didn’t have much cash. We picked Warren, Pennsylvania for a road trip destination because it was just far enough away to be ‘different’ and it seemed to be planted right in the middle of ‘wilderness’.
A really nice surprise was the nearby Kinzua Bridge and Kinzua Dam. These were the very early days of the internet so you couldn’t just jump on the net and have all the information on a destination within minutes. Back in the day, you would have to call a 1-800 number to a state tourism agency and have them MAIL you a batch of brochures or a tourism book. So, we knew very little other than the fact there would be cheap American beer.
This past year, I was looking for ideas for weekend trips and the long forgotten Kinzua Bridge trip popped into my mind. I was shocked to find out that the bridge collapsed in 2003 after a tornado took it down!
Will I return? Yes. Probably not this summer but hopefully next. The plan would be to visit Kinzua Bridge and then wing over to Letchworth State Park in New York. Letchworth is known as the Grand Canyon of the East…

Interesting post. It seems hard to believe that finding out things was more difficult before the Internet really developed! I hope you’re able to visit the bridge sometime soon.
