There’s a couple titles to this article I was throwing around. “With Great Accessibility Comes Great Traffic” is one. When I first started to visit Hoggs Falls, you rarely met up with other humans, especially in winter. In fact, in winters not long past, I recall the parking lot not even being plowed.
Starting in summer of 2018, I really noticed an increase in visitors. And, there’s nothing wrong with that. But, it does increase the risk of damage to the environment and risk to human like as more people attempt to get more and more unique ‘selfies’ along this uneven, rugged terrain.
The increased traffic can be attributed to the new signage off the main highways. Add to that the fact that the parking lot is maintained year-round. Of course, there’s also the internet and social media presence created by folks like us that certainly draws attention.

The other title could have been “Just How Many Boyne Rivers Can You Fit In One Province?” I’ve been trekking around this area for about a quarter century now and just put two and two together. Within about a 20 minute drive along highway 10 you have access to two different rivers with the same name.
The river that runs through Boyne Valley Provincial Park, between Shelburne and Alliston, is named the Boyne River. This river is a tributary of the Nottawasaga River which empties into Georgian Bay at Wasaga Beach. This is not the Boyne River that tumbles over the Niagara Escarpment to create Hoggs Falls.
No, the Boyne River you see in the images and video below is a tributary of the Beaver River which creates nearby Eugenia Falls. That river also empties into Georgian Bay but further west at Thornbury.

About Hoggs Falls
Hoggs Falls is a small but picturesque Niagara Escarpment waterfall. This plunge is located on the Boyne River, just east of Flesherton, Ontario. The waterfall is 25 feet in height with a crest of around 45 feet. The latest feature is a fallen tree that now lies overhanging the centre of the crest.
There is a small parking lot just upstream from Hoggs Falls and access is free. However, expect that to change in the future as all conservation land north of Toronto seems to be changing to a pay-to-park system. This is being implemented even if there are absolutely no user facilities on site.
The Bruce Trail runs past the falls as the iconic hiking trail makes a long detour around the steep Beaver River valley. You can either hike or drive to Eugenia to check out the taller Eugenia Falls on the Beaver River. That waterfall is a bit harder to access in the winter as the parking lot is closed for the season.
