Most adults can’t stand them. There’s nothing more frustrating than getting caught at a rail crossing while a massive, slow moving freight train meanders down the line. Then, there’s the noise of those late night, early morning horns waking you up when you live near a railroad.
But, kids love them. There is nothing more fascinating to a child than a train. And, I think it’s just always been that way. Now, though, I think more and more adults are tapping into their childhood memories. If you’re not in a hurry or trying to sleep, I think, deep down, adults love them just as much.
Our latest afternoon of being entertained by train traffic came on May 25, 2019. It was a Saturday afternoon at the Georgetown, Ontario station. It’s a perfect time to visit this location. There is no weekend GO Train service so the parking lot and station are empty.
4pm to 7pm seemed to be a hot spot for rail action. We were treated to three freight trains and a VIA Rail passenger train. Below is a photo gallery, an up close and personal video and some background information.

About The Georgetown Train Station
The beautiful building seen throughout the video above is quite a historic structure. The Georgetown train station was built in 1858 by the Grand Trunk Railway. The station was transferred to Canadian National in 1923. GO Train service began in 1978.
There have been no fires. This building was never rebuilt. It looks the same now as it did back in the 1800’s. In fact, it was designated a Heritage Railway Station of Canada in 1994, just as the Stratford, Ontario station.
This structure is the work of Casimir Gzowski. This man was an engineer known for his work on the Canadian railways and the Welland Canal. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1813, Casimir moved to Canada in 1841, specifically to work on the canal. He served as the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1896 to 1897. He passed away in 1898.
CN Rail
The Canadian National Railway was founded in 1918. The company has always maintained its headquarters in Montreal, Quebec. This is Canada’s largest railway, serving eight of the ten provinces. Excluded are Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. There are 32,831 kilometres of track from Nova Scotia to British Columbia.
VIA Rail
A Crown Corporation of Canada, VIA Rail was formed in 1977 after being spun off from CN. This company is heavily subsidized by Transport Canada. VIA operates 500 trains per week across eight provinces. The use 12,500 kilometres of track. The tracks are nearly 100% owned and maintained by CN.
