CN Freight Trains: Video Experiments At Georgetown, Ontario

georgetown ontario via station sunset

I’ve filmed and published videos of freight trains on the YouTube Channel before. Typically, in the past, I’ve exclusively used the GoPro Hero 5 Black. This time, I did use that camera. But, I also used the Canon Rebel T6i DSLR with a Tamron 70-300mm Macro Zoom Lens attached.

What resulted was video footage from two drastically different points of view of the same trains. It’s definitely something I’ll be getting into more in the future.

GoPro Fail

As you’ll see in the short clip below that was posted on our Twitter account, we had some issues. The GoPro was attached to a fairly sturdy Manfrotto tripod. Albeit, the tripod was a lightweight version meant for travel.

Georgetown, Ontario Freight Trains (Full Video)

The following video (does not include the clip shown on Twitter) shows four large freight trains we filmed over a fairly short period of time on an October Saturday afternoon. The video alternates between DSLR and GoPro versions. Let us know what style you like best.

With the DSLR and the Tamron 70-300mm Macro Zoom lens, the close-up detail and the compression are very cool. The heat vapour rising from the engine is so enhanced by the zoom

The GoPro version gives a more all-around and more realistic view of the trains.

If you like what you see, please give it a ‘Thumb’s Up’ in YouTube. We would be grateful if you’d consider subscribing to our YouTube Channel.

Georgetown VIA Station Sunset Photos

After the freight trains all were gone and all the rail fans got in their cars and drove away, we remained. It would only be a two hour wait before the 6:30 VIA passenger train made an appearance.

Normally, this wouldn’t be a big deal and we’d leave with everyone else. But, the photographer in me knew to check the sunset time and position. It was expected to set at 6:30 and directly down the tracks.

The thought of capturing photos of a VIA train parked at the historic Georgetown station with the sun setting down the westbound tracks was too much to pass up. This was enhanced by the wispy high clouds that had been the only obstruction to a blue sky all day.

Well, the sunset, although short-lived, was quite spectacular. However, it seems the VIA train was either cancelled or extremely late. So, that element was missing but I captured a few of, what I thought, were some pretty decent photos.
