Fenelon Falls, Ontario: Lock 34 Of The Trent Severn Waterway

fenelon falls, ontario

It’s only about 20-30 minutes from our summer spot. Yet, rarely do we head over to Fenelon Falls. Bobcaygeon is closer and Peterborough or Lindsay have much more in the way of amenities.

But, there was this paddling life vest I needed for the Pelican Magna 100 kayak and it was only available at the Canadian Tire in Fenelon. So, westward we went.

This is such a photogenic town, especially around Lock 34 of the Trent Severn Waterway. But, it is much busier than nearby Lock 32 in Bobcaygeon. It seems the COVID-19 social distancing guidelines didn’t much apply…

With heavy rain over the previous week and some strong crosswinds coming from the direction of Cameron Lake, the locks proved to be entertaining.

I was able to capture video of a rental house boat getting lodged sideways in the lock and the ensuing battle to get straightened out. However, I can’t bring myself to post it to our YouTube Channel. Should I? I have the ability to blur out faces so as to not embarrass anyone too much…

Anywho, below is a driving tour video through the town and a photo gallery, mostly from around Lock 34. Below that is a bit more info on the town of Fenelon Falls, Ontario, Canada.

About Fenelon Falls

Known as the Jewel of the Kawartha’s, Fenelon Falls originally was known as Cameron’s Falls. It was incorporated as a town in 1874 and has around 2,000 permanent residents.

The town is home to Lock 34 of the Trent Severn Waterway. This lift connects Sturgeon Lake to the east with Cameron Lake to the west. This is a decent lift at 7.2 metres or 24 feet. Adding to the drama is the maelstrom created when the tub is emptied as the downstream doors are under the main street bridge. A pathway takes you under the bridge for an excellent view of the chaos.

It should be noted that there is no charge for parking anywhere in town. This is in stark contrast to places not far to the west, like Orillia and Barrie, that are charging tourists up to $50 per day to park due to the Coronavirus shit storm.
