Buffalo, NY Skyline Sunrise: Video And Photos (From Fort Erie, Ontario)

Back on the morning of February 19, 2019, I left my warm hotel room in Niagara Falls, Ontario well before sunrise and headed south to Fort Erie. Let’s face it, no one needs yet another photo of Niagara Falls. But, Fort Erie surprisingly has a lot to offer for photographers.

The main feature is the view across Lake Erie, just before it empties into the Niagara River. The Buffalo, New York downtown skyline is in perfect position in February for the sun to rise up behind it.

The waterfront is quiet in Fort Erie, especially when it’s -16C in the dark of those pre-dawn hours. This is in stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Niagara Falls where foreign tourists are constantly searching for new ways to empty their wallets.

So, on the morning of February 19, 2019, I had the waterfront all to myself. Things were looking amazing before the sunrise. The colours lit up the sky and the potential was quite exciting.

But then, the sun actually did rise. As it topped the buildings of downtown Buffalo, it soon after was snuffed out by the oncoming cloud cover being blown in from the northwest. In the time lapse video below, this ‘snuffing out’ of the sun is quite dramatic.

The colours were beautiful and promising pre-sunrise. Then, as you’ll see in the time lapse video below, the sun popped up over the buildings of downtown Buffalo then quickly was fizzled out by the incoming cloud cover.

The flow of ice is pretty amazing as the waters of Lake Erie get sucked into the Niagara River.
