Buckhorn, Ontario: Misty September Morning Visit [2020]

The next article coming up at It’s About Travelling is “29 Things To See And Do On A Kawartha Lakes Vacation”. What we have today is a bit of a preview.

Buckhorn, Ontario is a small community on the road from Bobcaygeon to Peterborough. It’s a short distance from Burleigh Falls and home to Lock 31 along the Trent Severn Waterway.

This is a quieter spot than nearby Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls but is still quite bustling in the summertime. For houseboat renters (for more info on houseboat rentals in the Kawarthas, check out this previous article: Kawartha Lakes Houseboat Rentals), the run between Buckhorn and Burleigh Falls is perhaps one of the most beautiful sections of the waterway.

We spend a lot of time in the summer months at Nogies Creek, between Bobcaygeon and Buckhorn. We take many excursions to Peterborough during our stays. Buckhorn’s Kawartha Country Wines, Country Mart Bakery, Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park and the grounds of Lock 31 are often pitstops along the way.

At the start of September, 2020, I took an early morning trip down to Peterborough for some sunrise photos (see those here: Peterborough Sunrise). On the way back, there were detours to capture video and photos at Trent University, the town of Lakefield, Lock 31 and the Signature Park of Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park.

Here’s a look at the locks and the provincial park:

Trent Severn Waterway Lock 31 [Buckhorn, Ontario]

As mentioned, the morning started out with what was an amazing sunrise in Peterborough. However, just a short distance north in Buckhorn, the sun was blocked by a typical thick mist off the lake.

Walking Tour Of Trent Severn Waterway Lock 31

Here’s some video footage from that same morning. This is a short walking tour around the grounds of Lock 31. The flow control dam is quite cool at this location. The style of dam and the placement of the pedestrian bridge allows you to get very close to that awesome power.

Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park [Signature Park]

We’ve featured this location at It’s About Travelling a time or two in the past. When we first discovered the Signature Site and trails, it was a little known park that was rarely crowded.

A few years back, someone got the idea of opening a river tubing business out of Buckhorn, using the Mississauga River within Kawartha Highlands. The business was shut down by Ontario Parks not long after, in part due to crowding, but the damage was done. This place was on the map.

As you’ll see in the video below that gallery, the Signature Site has just a short walking trail. But, that short trail leads to the feature, a short but refreshing waterfall that is an incredible relief from the heat in the summer.

The parking lot is located just a few kilometres out of Buckhorn when heading to Bobcaygeon. It’s nearly across the highway from Kawartha Country Wines – a must stop when travelling through the area.

As above, the photos have been cropped to fit the format. For full size versions, simply click on the individual photos.
