COVID-19 has stolen many travel opportunities. But, it has also provided us with some new ones. Recently, I was able to take the kayak from Nogies Creek on Pigeon Lake for a tour of Bobcaygeon, Ontario.
We’ve had a summer spot on Pigeon for the better part of a decade. We’ve been to Bobcaygeon countless times for food and supplies. However, I was able to travel in the kayak for a three hour round trip, uninterrupted by fast moving boats and personal water craft (in other words: yahoos on water).
I was able to paddle right up to the gates of Trent Severn Waterway Lock 32, enjoying incredible early morning reflections on the glassy waters of the canal.

I didn’t have the camera on for the whole 3 hour paddle. The time spent on Pigeon Lake is a bit boring. This video captures a tour via kayak from the Highway 36 bridge to the lower section of Lock 32. I then swing over to the dam before cutting back toward Pigeon Lake.

Trent Severn Lock 32 Image Gallery (Bobcaygeon, Ontario)
I’ll be perfectly honest, the photos in the gallery were taken a few days before the video. I’d been kayaking in Nogies Creek for sunrise and slipped into Bobcaygeon for coffee. It was still early enough for some good light so I stopped for a quick walk around the locks.

Lock 32 And The Trent Severn Waterway
A lock with a history. When the construction began on the Trent Severn back in 1833, this was the first. Obviously, over the around 160 years, things have changed but the location remains relatively the same. If you’re in town, visit the Foodland grocery store in the downtown. Their are several historic photos of the town and of the canal.
The waterway stretches 386 kilometres, or 240 miles, from end to end. The Trent Severn connects Lake Ontario (Bay of Quinte) in the east to Georgian Bay (Lake Huron) in the west. Lock 1 of the Canal is located at Trenton, Ontario, 2.9 kilometres from Lake Ontario. Lock 45 is located at Port Severn.
Bobcaygeon, Ontario
Incorporated as a village in 1876, Bobcaygeon was amalgamated into the City of Kawartha Lakes in 2000. This puts the former village under the same municipal government as nearby Fenelon Falls and Lindsay. The permanent population of the former village is just under 4,000. That number obviously balloons during the summer months.
You’ll see in the video that there are a couple of restaurants offering waterfront patios with their own docks. Riley’s Bar and Grill is located just below the locks. Bobcaygeon Inn is on the north side, on the stretch of water below the dam.
However, Graz Restobar can also be seen in the video. This restaurant is located adjacent to the swing bridge below Lock 32. They don’t have their own dock but you can tie up along the canal. Despite having open walls to the outside, in the early stages of the COVID-19 economic start, they were denied patio space by the city.
But, Graz is open and offers, in my opinion, the best food in town. Hopefully shortly, they will be fully reopened again. The restaurant was formerly known as Embers and was renamed in June, 2019. It has been our go-to for years and has never disappointed.
