Introducing Allegro Club Cayo Guillermo in Cuba

Well, she got me a tiny commission, as well, booking her two weeks at Cayo Guillermo through me. She was down from January 14, 2014 to January 28, 2014. On January 27, I got an urgent message from Sunwing about her booking. With impending brutal winter weather at the time, I thought the worst. It turns out, the ‘urgent message’ was that the resort changed names, effective January 27.

Formerly Hotel Villa Cojimar, as of January 27, the all-inclusive resort in Cayo Guillermo is now known as Allegro Club Cayo Guillermo, operated by Gran Caribe Hotels and Occidental Hotels. According to my ‘scout’, all the renovations were pretty much completed before their visit. Staff were busy at work with gardening and other small stuff.

Where is Cayo Guillermo? This is a tiny pile of sand off the northern coast of Cuba, directly adjacent to Cayo Coco. In fact, you fly into Jardines Del Rey International Airport and travel across a short causeway. The cayo is just over eight kilometres in length and made up of beautiful white sand and surrounded by the equally beautiful turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The resort consists of 280 rooms. The highlight are the bungalow suites with some located quite close to the waterfront. There is one major fresh water pool with a much smaller kids club pool. There are the typical recreational and spa facilities within the resort, some with additional fees.

The kids club, shown a few images above, is now open and caters to kids between four and 12 years of age. All children two and under stay free. The first child between 3 and 12 stays free and a second child 3-12 pays a reduced rate. This makes Allegro Club Cayo Guillermo a great resort to take the family.

The resort is not packed with restaurants and bars and does not provide a huge variety. However, the facilites are more than adequate. There is one buffet restaurant called Los Corales. The two A La Carte restaurants are La Trattoria, serving Italian food and La Patana, serving Cuban quisine. There is an additional snack bar that is open from 9am until 11pm as a bar and from 10:30am to 6pm to serve light meals.

The Hemingway Bar is located in the main lobby and is the only bar open 24 hours. The pool bar is listed as only being open until 2:30 in the afternoon.

This resort has been rated as a three-star. Even in March and April, just a month or two away and at the end of the high season, you will not pay more than $1,000 per person for a week’s all-inclusive stay out of Toronto, including flight and transfers. In the off-season, prices drop as low as $634 per person.
