In the winter/spring of 2011, we took a week, via a rickety Canjet Boeing 737, in Cayo Largo, Cuba at Sol Pelicano All-Inclusive Resort.
Cayo Largo is an island off the southwest coast of Cuba, on the Caribbean Sea. The island is small, measuring 25 km long and 3 km wide at its widest. All civilization is packing into the west end, leaving most of the island as an uninhabited wonderland. You will not find culture here as there are no permanent inhabitants. Resort staff are flown in from the mainland for three-week work stints.
Sol Pelicano was an excellent resort, especially for the money. The resort appeals to tourists from Italy and Argentina as well as Italians from Canada. The island is a nudist paradise as it is deemed legal. For those who don’t like to freely hang their junk in public (me…), you will see more bare skin than you might want but you will not feel threatened, by any means. ‘Naturism’ is mostly restricted to designated beaches.
For those who are not fans of long transfers between airport and hotel, Cayo Largo is for you. The International Airport is not farther than a 10 minutes drive from any of the resorts.
A must if staying is the Cayo Largo sunset cruise. The cruise takes you to Iguana Island then snorkeling on the coral reef before a great dinner on the boat at sunset. See video below.
